D.C. Weed now legal, but will Congress intervene?

We will never get tired of writing posts that begin with ‘X State Legalizes Marijuana!’.  We don’t have a state today, but close enough – as of midnight the District of Columbia will allow legal marijuana for recreational use!

(insert sound of possible screeching brakes)  Not so fast, say some members of Congress.  The only thing is, Congress has oversight on the District and its laws, and since marijuana is still federally illegal, of course some members of congress are making efforts to stop this.

According to the new law, residents of D.C. can:

  • Possess up to two ounces, but you can’t buy any.
  • You can share, but you can’t sell.
  • You can grow up to six plants, but only three can be mature.
  • You can’t consume it in any public place but absolutely not on federal land.

That last part if a bit of a bitch, as 29% of D.C.’s land is federal, some areas are obviously federal, but others, how are you to know?  Officials have even warned those that live near parks that they shoulnd’t be using on their own back porches!  Insane.

Congress, understandably (and sadly) isn’t lying down.  Heres a letter written to D.C. Mayor Bowser from Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, and Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.).  They are threatening Bowser with arrest, for carrying out the will(70%!) of the people.
